Dozens of counties are flouting National Voter Registration Act requirements to keep clean and accurate voter rolls.
Washington, D.C. – August 10, 2023 – This week, voters in Arizona and Virginia sent pre-litigation notice letters that call on Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes and Virginia Commissioner of Elections Susan Beals to take immediate and specific actions to correct their voter registration records in accordance with federal law. The letters, supported by the Honest Elections Project, give Arizona and Virginia 90 days to correct these apparent violations before facing a potential federal lawsuit.
Currently, 14 counties in Arizona and 101 counties and independent cities in Virginia appear to be in violation of Section 8 of the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), which requires states to maintain accurate and up-to-date voter rolls for elections for federal office. Of these, 43 counties and independent cities in Virginia and four counties in Arizona claim to have more voters than voting-age adult citizens.
Jason Snead, Executive Director of Honest Elections Project:
“Maintaining clean and accurate voter rolls is the first step towards fair and secure elections. Failing to maintain the voter rolls puts public confidence in the election process at risk and creates an unnecessary potential for fraud. The law is clear; all states must ensure that they are taking the appropriate steps to properly maintain voter lists. Bloated voter rolls are unacceptable, and every voter deserves to know that the officials we trust to run elections are doing all they can to preserve the integrity of the democratic process. We are proud to support these voters and the people of Arizona and Virginia, who are working to make it easier to vote and harder to cheat.”
Scot Mussi, Arizona Voter:
“It is apparent that Secretary of State Adrian Fontes and his predecessor have failed to perform the necessary voter list maintenance required by state and federal law. Clean and accurate voter rolls are a cornerstone to safe and secure elections, and we expect that our election officials will address these issues as quickly as possible.”
