Jason Snead, Executive Director of Honest Elections Project, provided the following statement:
“For too long, the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) has refused to change its National Mail Voter Registration Form to require proof of citizenship to register to vote, or even to respect individual state laws that mandate it. Since states must accept and use that form, the status quo creates a massive vulnerability noncitizens can exploit while making it harder and more expensive to verify voter citizenship.
“That must change. Requiring proof of citizenship is common sense, routine, and hugely popular. The time has come for the EAC to affirm laws that keep noncitizens from voting, not undercut them.”
