Honest Elections Project Statement on 10th Anniversary of Supreme Court’s Shelby County v. Holder Decision

WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 26, 2023 – Jason Snead, Executive Director of the Honest Elections Project, released the following statement in reaction to the 10^th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Shelby County v. Holder:

“Ten years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court issued an historic ruling. Since the Shelby decision, American elections have set records for voter turnout and engagement. In fact, when states adopt election integrity laws like voter ID, they usually see turnout go up. The last 10 years have shown that every single voting narrative on the left is wrong: election integrity laws are overwhelmingly popular, with support for voter ID nearing 90%, voting safeguards encourage participation, and the Voting Rights Act is alive and well post Shelby.

As the Court in Shelby pointed out 10 years ago, if the federal government is going to take the extreme step of seizing from the states the Constitutionally granted power to regulate elections, it must be based on clear and current data. And all the data says that states are succeeding at making it easier to vote and harder to cheat.”
