“Election reform deserves open and honest debate. Activists have already launched outlandish attacks meant to distract from the substance of the election reform proposals being debated during the special session. It is easy to vote in Texas, and many of the reforms being considered—expanding early voting hours and guaranteeing that voters in line can cast a ballot even after polls close—would make it easier.
“Texas is also considering voter ID requirements for absentee ballots, a measure recommended by experts to avoid problems with imprecise signature matching. And it is debating stronger bans on ballot trafficking, a practice that has been repeatedly demonstrated to create opportunities for fraud and disenfranchisement. These proposals are popular with most Americans, regardless of race, ethnicity, or political party according to several recent polls. Activists are free to disagree, but they should stick to the facts over hype.”
